Certain special features of the 19th century have been entirely neglected. An example of this neglect is the ignoring by historians of the role played by the Rothschild family in the history of the 19th century. The object of this work is to appraise the important influence of this family on the politics of the period, not only in Europe, but throughout the world. The influence of the Rothschilds, interestingly enough, is barely mentioned in other more comprehensive works. The aim of this work is to trace the rise of the House of Rothschild from its small beginnings to the great position it obtained, culminating in the year of its great crisis.

Translated from the German by Brian and Beatrix Lunn. He came from an ancient Lombard family of nobles. He wrote biographies on the history of the 19th century and was a specialist of biographical works on personalities from the European high aristocracy since the interwar.
Volume 1: Money’s Prophets: 1798-1848
Corti was a monarchist, as is also evident in his extensive work. His books contain numerous original statements from the witnesses of the late era and make use of historic sources some of which destroyed in the Second World War. This meticulously documented account gives a detailed and fascinating insight into the political, financial, economic and social forces in Europe just before, during and after the Napoleonic period.
The author describes how the first Rothschild began the business, the anti-Semitism and anti-Jewish legislation of the time, and how Mayer Amchel Rothschild and his sons managed to get through it. Prohibited from farming, joining trade unions, and nearly every possible way to earn a living, Rothschild began collecting and selling coins. The author provides detail on how money and power were wielded by the noble classes in Europe and their reactions to the people's revolution against the aristocracy in France.
Translations of documents from the era are provided to give the reader the flavor of the times, and to provide insight into the personalities, motivations and relationships between the key players: the Elector of Hesse, several finance ministers, the King of Prussia, the King of Austria, King of Naples, Wellington, Napoleon and others. The author details how mail was routinely controlled and opened, how the press was corrupted by bribes, the graft through which armies were bought and sold, and how leaders used taxes as their own personal bank accounts.
The author describes the roles of various leaders and countries in regards to the financial and political decisions of the time. Corti details how money was valued, transported and borrowed, and the financial instruments such as government debt and bonds.
